Communication Protocols for Order Management in Collaborative Manufacturing

In today’s highly competitive market, business competition occurs not only between companies, but also between supply chains. Distributed, yet autonomous, companies intend to collaborate with others, so they can focus on their core competencies to enhance their own competition in the market. However, collaboration relies on quick information exchanges, which are now fragile between collaborative companies. Worse yet, it still lacks a formal pattern to quickly design efficient protocols, as interactive regulations between companies. This research modularizes the design of communication protocols for order management in collaborative manufacturing. The modules that have been defined include four categories: order, response, confirmation, and others. Based on the four categories, ten modules are defined. With the ten modules, companies can easily construct the protocols that may be suitable for them. To illustrate the applicability of the modules, this research designs various protocols associated with order management in collaborative manufacturing. The protocols are also implemented on distributed computing environment. The results show collaborative companies can efficiently build communication for order management based on the protocols.
